Strengthening the ideals of Peace: Celebrating the International Day of Peace with the Students of Government Bilingual Practicing High School (GBPHS/LBA) Yaoundé

In a world often riffed with conflicts and challenges, the quest for peace remains an unwavering ambition. On the 20th of September 2023, BONET joined hands with the enthusiastic students GBPHS (LBA) Yaoundé to commemorate the International Day of Peace. Embracing the theme, “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the Global Goals,” the event was a beacon of hope and a call to action for a more harmonious world.
The day commenced with an air of anticipation as Upper sixth students, some staff members, and members of the BONET team gathered at the LBA campus, eager to delve into discussions and activities centered on fostering peace and shunning violence.
The event kicked off with impactful presentations and insightful discussions on the significance of World Peace Day and the Global Goals. Representatives from BONET delivered engaging talks, emphasizing the importance of individual and collective actions in building peace and putting an end to violence in the school environment as well as in their communities.
Students were actively involved in interactive sessions, exchanging ideas, sharing personal experiences, and brainstorming innovative ways to contribute to peacebuilding efforts. Their enthusiasm and determination to make a positive difference were truly inspiring.
One of the highlights of the day was the question and answer session. The Students asked questions relating to the crisis rocking Cameroon and issues surrounding internally displaced persons as some of them happen to be IDPs. One of the students, an IDP asked “Is there peace in Cameroon?” He added that as an IDP likewise many others who witnessed a lot of violence in the English-speaking regions he does not believe that there is something that exists as peace. Another student asked; “What happens to a state that is at war and does not observe the International Day of Peace day by engaging in a ceasefire?” these and many other questions were given keen attention and answers were provided by the BONET team. In all, the students were encouraged to shun violence and be ambassadors of peace on their school campus as well as in their communities.
As the activity drew to a close, the prevailing sentiment was one of optimism and determination. The celebration of World Peace Day had not only been an occasion for reflection but also a catalyst for action. Each participant left with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to take concrete steps toward building peace.
In a world where the pursuit of peace is more crucial than ever, the collaboration between BONET and LBA students stands as a testament to the power of collective efforts. The celebration of World Peace Day served as a reminder that by coming together, embracing diversity, and taking actionable steps, we can pave the way for a more harmonious and sustainable future for all Cameroonians.
Together and always, let us be the change-makers, the advocates, and the champions of peace.
